Originally founded 73 years ago in a post-war world, Putney Student Travel’s fledgling mission was to help eradicate global conflict through shared cultural experiences and global stewardship. Seven decades later we are still crafting transformative summer programs that carry out the original mission of this family-led organization: To develop thoughtful, well-rounded young leaders through experiential, intellectual, emotional, and cultural engagement. Because we believe in the power of collaboration, we also work with reputable educational institutions such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Oxford University, Columbia, and Harvard. Our programs serve 6th-12th graders, ranging from 10 days to 4 weeks, and spanning the globe from New York to Namibia and the Gulf of California to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
It is unrealistic for all candidates to embody everything on this list, which is why we hire holistic leadership teams. Our most successful candidates meet some combination of the following criteria: - A deep desire to work with, educate, and lead youth from a wide range of backgrounds. Specific in-country experience in the destinations we visit. - Advanced proficiency or fluency in the language specific to the destination. - Significant experience working with students both in and out of the classroom and the ability to problem solve and make decisions that facilitate an engaging learning environment. - Patience and adaptability in a highly dynamic work environment. - An ability to assess risk and make smart decisions regarding the health, safety, and overall well-being of the group. - A passion for travel, exploration, and the program theme. - For seminar and workshop instructors, ideal candidates are enthusiastic about designing their own hands-on and field-based curriculum. - Career leaders should have experience working professionally in the field of the program theme. - Most Pre-College and Oxford Academia instructors hold advanced degrees and/or have considerable professional experience with the topic in addition to teaching experience. - The ability to be “on” 24 hours a day for the duration of the program and to manage and communicate their own personal needs in order to do so.
