Role Overview

The Math Specialist is a mathematician leader responsible for implementing a comprehensive mathematician program at the assigned school by being a teacher model, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for mathematical instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Instruction

  • Provide direct instruction in the areas of mathematics for identified groups and individual students, with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional learners.
  • Responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually, in small groups, or in full groups, to enable students to develop mathematic skills.
  • Use data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Provide students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plan for individual learning needs.
  • Demonstrate strong pedagogy.

Mathematic Leadership

  • Facilitate strong mathematic instructional strategies through: o Co-teaching to model mathematic instruction. o Observing and providing feedback.
  • Identify mathematic literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
  • Provide curriculum support and training for teachers.
  • Be a model of teacher techniques in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.
  • In collaboration with school and regional leadership, select tier 2 instructional materials to meet student needs.
  • Supports School Leadership with organizational wide mathematic practices and policies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of mathematic related learning and development initiatives, specifically providing expertise to create a successful learning environment for students.

Data and Assessment

  • Collaborate with and coach teachers on using assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school mathematic data and plan for future mathematic needs.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up and support in the use of assessment tools.
  • Assess students using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instructional needs.
  • Monitor performance metrics and mechanisms to track needs, trends, the effectiveness of policies and programs, and progress toward accomplishing objectives.
  • Evaluate qualitative feedback, quantitative data, and observations on a regular basis to inform strategy, decision-making, and accountability.

Family Engagement

  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all families and share progress.
  • Be available for open houses, family-teacher conferences, and other events involving families.
  • Make yourself available to students, families, and other staff members.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of family workshops and informational sessions involving the math program

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University with a concentration in Mathematics or related fields of study required.
  • Master’s degree in reading instruction is strongly preferred.
  • Valid NYS Teaching Licensure or willingness to pursue state certification required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Mathematic school educator, preferably in a charter or public school environment.
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
