The mission of Citizens of the World Los Angeles (CWC LA) is to provide a socio-economically, culturally, and racially diverse community of students in Los Angeles with an intellectually challenging, experiential learning environment that develops each student's confidence, potential, and individual responsibility as citizens of the world. CWC LA schools develop students’ social and emotional skills to prepare them to become citizens of the world, and we promote academic rigor through a constructivist, project-based learning approach, to support and develop children’s natural intellectual curiosity. CWC LA enrolls a diverse student body that reflects the abundant diversity of the communities served by our schools.

On a grown path to serving more than 5,000 students in the coming years, CWC LA operates five charters:

o CWC Hollywood (TK-5th) operating since 2010.

o CWC Silver Lake (TK-8th) operating since 2012.

o CWC Mar Vista (TK-8th) operating since 2013.

o CWC West Valley (TK-4th) operating since 2020.

o CWC East Valley (TK-3rd) operating since 2021.

CWC LA has a Regional Support Office (RSO) that supports all CWC LA schools. We work with our network partners at Citizens of the World Charter Schools (CWCS), linking the schools in Los Angeles to CWC schools in other parts of the country.

Job Overview and Summary

ASP Mentors are responsible for leading students in fun, engaging, and developmentally-aligned after-school programming that provides daily academic, recreation, and enrichment activities for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) - 8th-grade students. This is a school-site based position with daily afternoon hours at approximately 22 hours per week (MON/TUES/THURS/FRI: 1:45-6pm, WEDS: 1:45-6pm).

Key Responsibilities

The After School Program Mentor’s job responsibilities include:

● Provide academic assistance and enrichment programming to students

● Lead one subject, choosing from recreational sports, multimedia, art, dance/cheer, visual/performing arts/theater, robotics, yearbook, and school newspaper

● Provide academic assistance, intervention support, and recreational programming through facilitation of small student groups

● Maintain daily attendance records and supervise assigned students to ensure that they are safe and that the program operates in an organized and effective manner

● Ensure timely completion and submission of all relevant data, including early release forms, evaluations from students, and progress data as requested

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High school diploma (AA degree or at least two years of college coursework preferred)
  • Prior experience working with school-aged children in an academic or recreational setting
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Fluency in a second language (preferred, Spanish and Korean as high-priority languages)
  • Extensive knowledge of age-appropriate classroom and behavior management skills and age-appropriate activities
  • Ability to lead groups of students in activities while placing a high priority on safety
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and students
  • A passion for working with youth

Physical Requirements

● Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing effectively

● Approximately 50% of time is spent sitting, while frequently required to walk, stand and bend

● Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

● Employees will be required to lift and/or move unassisted up to 25 pounds

● Sitting or standing for extended periods and manual dexterity to operate a computer and other various office equipment as needed
