During all lessons, students are given opportunities to work in small instructional groups, engage in higher-order thinking that prompts discussion, and allows students to make their thinking visible. Through purposeful teacher models, facilitation, and checks for understanding, students will be supported in becoming critical thinkers. Students engage in challenging tasks that create a productive struggle, supporting them to think critically in a collaborative work environment. Across all subjects, Thinking Maps provide students with the opportunity to make their thinking visible. Transference from the map to a task allows students to engage in quality, meaningful interactions with the content at a higher level. Through our Bucket Filler initiative, students are provided social, emotional support that embodies a positive, nurturing, diverse learning environment. By providing our students with a foundation in academics, as well as social and emotional needs, we are creating 21st-century learners. We imagine a future where the students at P.S. 131 are conscious, critical thinkers of a diverse society.
