Home to approximately 550 Pre-K to 4th grade students, South Shaver Elementary School is located in the heart of Pasadena, Texas--a working-class suburb of Houston. Founded in 1949, the school has a rich history in the local community. In 2014, the original school building was replaced by a beautiful two-story facility designed by one of South Shaver’s former students. Every classroom is equipped with an interactive projector, a document camera, a portable computer for the teacher, and a Chromebook for each student. A safe and nurturing learning environment is sustained through a combination of proactive approaches, including PBIS, CHAMPS, and Conscious Discipline. Professional Learning Communities at each grade level collaborate weekly to formulate instructional plans, design common formative assessments, and review data. A three-tiered system of intervention is embedded in the master schedule and is implemented by all grade-level teams, who are supported daily by six instructional paraprofessionals and a full-time intervention teacher. All first-year teachers participate in a mentoring partnership with an experienced teacher who has a similar schedule and teaching assignment. Both new and returning teachers are routinely supported through continuous coaching and feedback cycles led by three on-site instructional coaches. Opportunities for parent engagement and community involvement are provided through monthly events that are planned and coordinated by a dedicated Parent Coordinator. A community SPARK Park is currently under construction on school grounds.
