The James and Grace Lee Boggs School is a community-based public charter school on the east side of Detroit. Founded by three women educators in 2013, the school has grown from serving 30 students in grades K-4 on its very first day to serving 150 students in K-8. Our mission is to nurture creative, critical thinkers who contribute to the well-being of their communities. Our school is small and our culture is strong. We believe that we grow and learn from building community and so this is an expectation of both child and adult alike. We are a collaborative, hard-working team of excellent teachers that encourages our students to use their knowledge and voice for the collective good. Benefits of working here are: dedicated and helpful colleagues, stable leadership, brilliant and funny students, and supportive families. We are one of a handful of charter schools in Michigan with a collective bargaining unit, an in school library with a librarian, and an upcoming community playground.
The ideal candidate is hard-working, dedicated, collaborative, fun-loving, and nerdy! Everyone here cares about being excellent instructors as well as responsible community members. We dress to get dirty with the kids. We care deeply and invest in their long-term success by getting to know the kids, their families, and encouraging their unique contributions to the community.
The Boggs School is one of a handful of charter schools in Michigan with a collective bargaining unit. Our competitive salary scale is negotiated by the staff and includes full benefits. We use a place-based model of learning so there is encouragement for learning to happen both in and out of the classroom with many community partners.
