Find the Right School for Your Teaching Career > Lesson 4 of 7

What Really Matters: Student Discipline

If a school’s philosophy on student behavior is fundamentally opposed to what you believe, you might not feel supported by school leadership if you decide to teach there. Do the research and ask the right questions beforehand to avoid this headache.

Topics Covered

  • Do you align more with a restorative justice approach, or a no-nonsense approach?
  • How do you enforce consequences in your classroom? Schools vary a great deal in their expectations for student behavior, and the way they manage student discipline. If you have different standards, it might not be a good fit.
  • What you should be researching to find out if a school is consistent with your ideologies, and what questions to ask during your interview to find out more.
