Requirements:
- Valid RI Certificate in Secondary Mild/Moderate Special Education
- Valid RI Certificate in Secondary Science (7-12)
- Valid Rhode Island Teaching Certificate in ESL or commitment to complete certification within three (3) years
- Bilingual preferred
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES /DUTIES
- Provides direct Science instruction to students in a self-contained and inclusion classroom settings.
- Creates and implements a compelling vision of the curriculum, teaching, and learning standards and practices that align with the Science Common Core Standards and will result in college and career readiness for each student.
- Implements curricula, instructional practices, and assessments that are culturally competent and that align with WIDA, Common Core Standards, and research-based practices for language learning.
- Incorporates ELLs backgrounds and experiences to improving performance by using a variety of techniques to ensure content concepts are comprehensible.
- Incorporate student's background in the lesson plan and understands how to linguistically make connections with prior native language development.
- Develop detailed behavior management plans to address individual student’s needs.
- Accommodating the needs of students in various educational environments as indicated per IEP.
- Collaborate with students, families, and educational team to develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with Federal and State Regulations.
- Coordinate and implement service delivery with general educators, related services providers, support staff, other special educators and building administrators.
- Coordinate evaluations, progress reports, and timelines with general educators, related service providers, support staff, other special educators and building administrators.
- Establish two-way communication to engage parents/guardians as critical partners before, during and after the team process.
- Utilize instructional materials that coordinate with district curricula to implement instruction that addresses students’ goals and language needs while providing access to grade-level content.
- Maintain a positive learning environment that promotes the academic, social and personal well- being of all students.
- Maintain and use adaptive/assistive technology as needed.
- Develop and implement classroom and curricular accommodations and modifications for students, including language development adaptations for MLLs.
- Cooperatively plan and teach with other educators.
- Assess progress, maintain documentation, monitor student learning/progress and report as specified in the plan (MTSS, 504 Plans, IEP, etc.).
- Follow all RIDE regulations related to ELL Students with Disabilities, including determining if, MLLs with disabilities are eligible to continue as MLL or to exit from their MLL status, completing, and distributing all related paperwork.
- Bases all academic goals, plans, activities, and actions on what is best for the student.
- Consistently practice a growth mindset, demonstrating a strong class culture and using feedback to reflect and set goals.
- Cultivates a stewardship of collaborative learning and leadership in and out of the classroom integrating tools, strategies, and suggestions based of BPL with the ultimate goal of distributing knowledge and expertise in a skillful way that empowers and engages colleagues and students.
- Communicate with families regularly to discuss student performance, attendance, progress, etc. via phone calls, emails, written correspondence.
- Such duties deemed necessary by the building administrator or Director of Student Services or Director of Equity, Empowerment and Excellence for English Learners
